Businessman Gives $1,000 Checks To Every Student At Paradise High School

Bob Wilson, a San Diego real estate developer and restaurant owner, hands out $1,000 checks to students and staff from Paradise High School on Tuesday evening in Chico, Calif. The town of Paradise was largely destroyed by a wildfire this month.

The California town was largely destroyed by fire earlier this month. High school "was the first, last and only truly carefree time," said Bob Wilson, who gave $1.1 million to students and staff.

In Gesture To India, Pakistan Offers Easy Access To Sikh Holy Site

Sikh worshippers gather outside their holiest site, the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur. It is believed to be the place where the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, died in the 16th century. In a rare goodwill gesture this week, India and Pakistan broke ground on a corridor that will allow visa-free travel for Indian Sikhs to the holy site.

For decades, India's Sikhs have longed to reach one of their holiest sites, a soaring white temple, built on a river bank. A new corridor will allow them visa-free access to the temple.

Flash Floods Hit Communities Devastated By Camp Fire

Vehicles pass each other on a flooded street in Chico, Calif. Flash flooding hit a wildfire-scarred area of Northern California on Thursday, forcing officials to deploy swift water rescue teams to save people stuck in vehicles and rescue them from homes after a downpour near the Paradise area.

"The roots and the bottoms of the utility poles are just kind of swimming," Cal Fire spokesman Rick Carhart said on Thursday. Rescue teams worked to save motorists stranded on flooded roads.

St. Louis Police Officers Indicted For Beating An Undercover Colleague

Police respond on Sept. 17, 2017, in St. Louis to demonstrators protesting the acquittal of former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley, who had been charged with first-degree murder in a 2011 on-duty shooting. A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted three officers who responded to the protests in the beating of a fourth officer, who was working undercover that night.

The September 2017 acquittal of a white police officer charged with killing a black suspect led to protests during which the beating outlined in the indictment occurred.

Another Drug Crisis: Methamphetamine Use By Pregnant Women

Kristen Philman first tried methamphetamine in her early 20s, as an alternative to heroin and other opioids. When she discovered she was pregnant, she says, it was a wake-up call, and she did what she needed to do to stop using all those drugs.
